Although OPPO has never launched any commercialized product lines, OPPO has recently continued to announce the successful development of OPPO under-screen camera technology for the next generations. Unlike some previously applied under-screen camera technologies that reduce pixel density to capture more light, OPPO’s new technology uses smaller pixels in the selfie camera area, allowing the pixel density to remain the same as the rest of the screen. Let’s follow the following article to understand OPPO phones with under-screen cameras better!
What is an OPPO under-screen camera?
On August 4, 2021, OPPO officially launched the next generation of under-screen camera technology on smartphones. By combining the best hardware upgrades and exclusive AI algorithms, OPPO’s under-screen camera has brought new under-screen camera solutions, integrating the front camera discreetly under the phone screen to provide a complete visual experience, whether the user is using the camera or not. Bringing the perfect balance between screen quality and camera quality, this is considered a comprehensive under-screen camera solution from OPPO.

This new solution solves many of the technical and manufacturing challenges that have plagued under-display camera technology since its inception. The breakthrough upgrades address issues including inconsistent display quality above the camera, poor image quality due to the screen covering the camera, and reliability and longevity issues. Thanks to advances in some of these areas, OPPO has been able to upgrade its under-display camera solution to take the full-screen experience to the next level.
OPPO phone lines with under-screen camera

OPPO has been developing under-screen camera technology since late 2019, but so far it has not actually released a phone equipped with this new technology to consumers. However, the launch of an OPPO phone with an under-screen camera may take place shortly.
Should I buy an OPPO phone with a camera hidden under the screen at this time?
In terms of display capabilities, OPPO’s under-screen camera solution will introduce users to some new upgrades in structural design as well as AI algorithms:
– Improved pixel shape: the new solution can shrink the size of each pixel while maintaining the same number of pixels to ensure high 400-PPI display quality even in the area where the camera is integrated.
– Transparent wiring system and new design: OPPO has replaced the traditional screen wiring system with a unique transparent wiring material. Combined with a high-precision manufacturing process that helps narrow the width of the wiring by up to 50%, providing significantly better display quality along with a smoother visual experience.

– Improved screen accuracy, color, and brightness: In contrast to the current standard of using a 1-pixel circuit to control 2 pixels (“1-to-2”) in the screen above the camera, OPPO has introduced a new solution that uses proprietary screen technology, with each pixel circuit only leading to 1 pixel (“1-to-1”). Combined with OPPO’s precise compensation algorithm, this technology will allow control of the color and brightness of the entire screen with a deviation of only about 2%. For uses such as reading e-books, reading news, or looking up maps, OPPO’s under-screen camera technology will allow for accurate display of small fonts, better preserving and expressing texture details and colors, providing a realistic and consistent experience.
– Improved reliability and lifespan: With the introduction of “1-1” pixel circuitry as well as dedicated optimization algorithms, OPPO’s under-screen camera solution is capable of providing display compensation in the hidden camera area, improving the lifespan of the screen by up to 50%.
In terms of camera quality, OPPO’s US research institute has developed a series of AI imaging algorithms – including diffraction reduction, HD,R and AWB – to reduce some of the defects that often appear in under-screen cameras, such as glare and blur. OPPO has also developed its AI diffraction reduction model by using data from tens of thousands of images to control diffraction problems at the light source, allowing users to capture extremely clear and realistic images.

As consumers increasingly favor phones with large screen-to-body ratios and novel form factors, OPPO has invested heavily in research and development in these areas. OPPO has introduced three generations of under-display camera solutions since it began developing the technology in 2018, and has applied for more than 200 related patents in the process.

In 2020, OPPO also made many contributions to the development of this technology by proposing the first standards for under-screen camera technology to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This includes proposals for 7 key technical indicators: screen transmittance, uniformity, reflectance, gamma correction, color shift, and brightness reduction.

Thus, it can be seen that OPPO will continue to research and develop more hardware design as well as algorithm processing capabilities to further optimize OPPO under-screen camera technology, with the ultimate goal of bringing an under-screen camera system with the best quality to users worldwide.
